Alaskan king crab or Red King Crab is a variety of the Paralithodes Camtschaticus family.  Alaskan king crab is considered one of the most expensive seafood products especially valued by gourmet food enthusiasts for its delicious white meat. Alaska king crabs are found in the Pacific Ocean along the Canadian and Alaskan coastline.

Alaskan king crab ranges in width from 8 to 14 inches.  Their leg length, however, can easily reach six to seven feet long. The average weight of a male crab is about 10 to 15 pounds. The lifetime of an Alaska king crab is about 15 to 20 years. Sexual maturation age, or the ability of Alaskan king crab to reproduce itself, is about ten to twelve years.  Where fisheries are most interested in young crab for their meat, conservation practices must be followed to maintain viable populations of Alaskan king crab.

Red King Crab is also found along the North Pacific coastline of Russia, particularly along the Bering Sea and Kamchatka Island.  Norway also has succeeded in artificially reproducing Red King Crab where they are now found along the coastline of the Barents Sea.   However in recent years Norwegian Red King Crab populations have been decreasing for unknown reasons.  It has been suggested that this decrease in Red King Crab populations may be due to water pollution, poaching and global warming of Arctic Ocean waters.
